BCT uses the WebDAV technology for secured file sharing among our staff, partners, and customers. This technology is part of our corporate communications and collaboration services. All sessions are authenticated with our integrated Active Directory service and encrypted with our PKI system for access control and privacy.

The WebDAV technology enables the mounting of shared folders on network drives from remote user locations across the Internet.

No additional software is required to mount and map our Web Folders. All the capabilities you need are a core part of your operating system. You do have to understand how to mount a Web Folder including how to configure the features of your specific operating system.

You do not need any special login accounts or passwords to connect to a Web Folder. The system uses your BCT-LLC Active directory username and password, the same information you use to connect to our email server. You will see only the folders that you are authorized to connect to based upon the BCT-LLC Security Groups where you are a member. If you believe you should have access to a folder that you do not see, please contact us and we will verify or correct your Active Directory privileges.

Installing Web Folders

To use a WebDAV, you must connect to the server's shared folders by installing a network drive. This usually has to be done once. There are no special instructions for using the Web Folder, since it behaves and is accessed just like any other storage media such as a thumb drive or CD.

WebDAV Technology

The Synology file servers use the Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) technology and protocols. WebDAV allows web sites to appear to be a normal file server where users can browse, access, read, edit, and write files. WebDAV was defined in RFC 4918 by a working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). You can read more about WebDAV here.

Please contact us if you need assistance or encounter problems. Remember that the use of Web Folders is optional, and that you can always access the same file system through a web connection using the Synology File Station application. The difference is that with File Station, all of your activities are constrained within a browser windows, unlike the Web Folder service which is fully integrated with your graphical desktop.
